As you may be aware, Windows 10 will reach its end of life on October 14, 2025. After this date, Microsoft will stop providing free security updates, non-security updates, and technical support for this version. However, this doesn't mean your PC will cease to function; it just means you'll need to take responsibility for maintaining its security and performance.
If you've tried upgrading to Windows 10 but encountered compatibility issues and error messages, don't worry—there are still options available to you:
- Ignore the Deadline: Although not recommended, you could choose to do nothing. Without ongoing security updates after Windows 10 support ends, your device will be vulnerable to cyber threats and viruses. You will need to find alternative ways to protect your device, which may not be as effective. Additionally, the lack of technical support and updates could lead to reduced efficiency.
- Switch to Linux: If you're tech-savvy and not ready to part with your PC, you can replace Windows 10 with the Linux operating system. Be prepared for potential challenges when transitioning to a new operating system.
- Upgrade "Incompatible" PCs via a Technical Loophole: Even if your PC failed the compatibility check, you might still upgrade it using a workaround. ZDNET provides a guide, which involves a minor registry edit and configuring your PC to use Secure Boot with the Trusted Platform Module (TPM). Note that if you receive a warning about unsupported upgrades, it means the manufacturer won't be liable for any issues, but your data won't be immediately affected.
- Purchase Extended Security Updates (ESUs) from Microsoft: While free updates will cease, Microsoft announced in December 2023 that they will offer subscription-based Extended Security Updates for up to three years. This option is costly, with prices escalating over the three years, but offers some level of continued security. Educators receive a significant discount.
- Buy a New PC: If your current device is outdated, investing in a new PC compatible with Windows 11 is a viable option. New computers typically offer better performance, enhanced security, and increased productivity. Remember to back up your data regularly to prevent any loss.
Consider these options carefully to determine the best course of action for your needs.
